In Ghana, cannabis has been legalized strictly for industrial and medicinal purposes within a highly regulated framework. Only cannabis containing not more than 0.3% THC by dry weight is permitted for cultivation as industrial hemp. This versatile crop is used in producing textiles, paper, biodegradable plastics, biofuels, animal feed, and eco-friendly building materials such as hempcrete.
For medicinal use, cannabis is not legalized for recreational consumption. Instead, under NACOC’s oversight, research and pharmaceutical development focus on safe cannabinoid-based medicines for conditions such as chronic pain, epilepsy, neuropathy, and chemotherapy-related side effects.
